SPEECHES

This is a common question asked by dance team coaches - "Can I use a speech in my mix?"

While you should always ask your local VARSITY representative about rules and regulations, we can narrow down to some specific answers for you regarding speeches.

Catherine Morris from UDA, said this when asked about the rules of using speeches in a competition dance mix.

“While we cannot give clearance on specific speeches, in general, any speech by a government official is in the public domain, while speeches by a private citizen, even if given in public, are the protected works of that person."

You could also reach out to the author of the speech and get written permission to mix with other music and use for performance purposes at schools and performance venues, and then it could be used. You would need to include that written permission along with your other licensing paperwork when showing licensing for each event you attend.

HOPE THIS HELPS!
